Bible study: The importance of Paul in Cyprus and Paphos

It isn’t too late to book a May 2012 bible study tour and Christian cruise with Living Passages.

Guests on the May 2012 and October 2012 biblelands trips will get to spend several days in Cyprus. While here, tour Salamis, widely known as the location where Paul and Barnabas landed. In Acts 13:5 it says “When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper.”

Along with this tour, we will get the chance to tour a monastery nearby where many items belonging to Paul and Barnabas are kept. This is a great learning opportunity for us and one that is designed to lead to conversation and deep thought.

In southern Cyprus sits Paphos. This was a key location for many individuals who sought out the Greek Goddess Aphrodite. Paphos features breathtaking villas and palaces that rival any in the world. This location would later would be known to the Christian world as the location where Paul engaged in a battle with Bar-Jesus, also known as Elymas, a powerful sorcerer. Acts 13:9-12 says:

“Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.
