Justice in Destroying the Walls of Jericho
We learn from the Book of Joshua about the incredibly disturbing rituals of the Canaanites. The Canaanites were an evil group of people who were infamously known for practicing rituals of child sacrifices, male and female prostitution, and publicly witnessed and glorified sexual demonstrations. The significance of God destroying the walls of Jericho (Israel tour site) is that the walls were literally harboring the fruit of their evil deeds. The bones of babies where found in the fallen walls of Jericho. Meaning, the Canaanites had built child sacrifices into the walls.
“Under the debris, in this “High Place” (the wall) Macalister found great number of jars containing the remains of children who had been sacrificed to Baal. The whole area proved to be a cemetery for new-born babes.” (Halley 166, 1965)
We read in Joshua 6:20 that after the Israelites had marched around the city of Jericho seven times on the seventh day, they blew trumpets and the army shouted and the wall collapsed. Joshua 6:21 explains how the Israeli soldiers…
“utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.”
Of all the ways God could have delivered Jericho into the Israelite’s hands, He chose to reduce this enormous wall to rubble at the sound of the Israelite’s battle cry. We gain a new perspective on God’s justice by knowing that dead babies were built into this wall that God completely destroyed.
Psalms 37:28-29 seems to paint a picture of what happened on this day.
“…wrongdoers will be completely destroyed ; the offspring of the wicked will perish. The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.”
