Here we can bring many First Testament stories to life (e.g., I Kings 22). Herod later rebuilt Samaria and called it Sebastia. Thus we have a mixture of Israelite and Roman ruins. Sebastia is also where Philip preached to such success that soon Peter and John joined him. Sebastia is believed by some to be the burial place of John the Baptist. We continue south through ancient Shechem and then drive up Mt. Gerizim to visit with the local small Samaritan community still practicing their faith and visit their museum of tribal generations and ancient scrolls. We drive down to the narrow pass between the mountains Ebal and Gerizim to the tel of ancient Shechem, first destination in the land both for Abraham (Genesis 12:6) and his returning grandson Isaac (33:18). Stand amidst the ruins of the first Temple of the Lord (Joshua 24:1, 26). Stop at Jacob’s Well. Another major site today is Shiloh, which is the traditional home of the Ark of Covenant and the Tabernacle of Moses. Pass Bethel and continuing through the Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea. We take a close-up view of the fully-preserved Herodian structure (same design as the Temple periphery) honoring the graves of the patriarchs and matriarchs. We then drive down to the Shephelah: the low hills between the mountain and the coast. Continue north for a stop in the Valley of Elah, where David encountered Goliath (I Samuel 17). After reliving this story, we head to Jaffa the oldest port in the world. Jonah set sail for Tarshish from Jaffa. Jaffa was also the home of Tabitha, who was raised from the dead by Peter.
