Birding, Early in South African Nature Reserve

Birding in South Africa

Deep in the bushveld of South Africa, away from bustling cities and noisy streets, you’ll find a plethora of bird life with a variety of colors that no artist’s palette could cover. When rising early, one can see the unique African birds active in the early morning hours. It’s a birding paradise!

What a thrill! Could this be a bit like the fifth day of Creation, when the skies filled with the newly formed birds of endless diversity?

And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds–livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:20-25

Nylsvley Nature Reserve

On our South African Family Safari & Creation Tour we drive to the Nylsvley Nature Reserve.  It is regarded as one of the premier bird-watching localities in the country. Most of the thousands who visit the reserve each year are birding devotees. Few other places will offer such a stunning variety of birds all in one day. One is truly amazed at God creation as we walk through the open aviaries, hearing the unique calls and striking sounds, as well as the vivid colors of the throngs of birds.

The Nylsvley Nature Reserve is known for its exceptional avifaunal diversity. There are recorded 370 species, of which 102 are waterfowl. During the  rainy seasons the number grows when the floodplain becomes a hive of activity. The best estimate for water bird numbers is a mind-boggling 80,000, with up to 420 recorded species. An impressive 50 avian species can only be found in South Africa, which gives birding enthusiasts a prime opportunity to spot something very special.

The system also plays an important role for frogs and fish, which gather in large numbers to breed when the plain becomes flooded. Breeding of endangered Roan antelope, which use the floodplain extensively, and rare Tsessebe, is another of the conservation priorities and appealing features of the reserve.
