“Gate of Heaven” on the Island of Patmos
Have you ever pondered what is meant by โthe gate of Heaven?โ In Genesis 28:17 we read where Jacob falls asleep and has heavenly visions. He describes a โstairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven,โ in Genesis 28:12. And, in Genesis 28:17 he says, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
Another exciting section of scripture on this topic takes us to the island of Patmos, a primary teaching location seen on our Christian group travel tours. This Biblical island, where the apostle John was imprisoned toward the end of his days, is where John received intricate visions that make up the Book of Revelation. Particularly interesting is what God showedย John in Revelation 4:1. It says:
โAfter this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, โCome up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.โ
The Greek word for โdoorโ here is thura, meaning portal or an opening. Perry Stone, author of โOpening the Gates of Heaven,โ(below) proposes that there are gates in the spiritual realm that God opens over his people to connect us to His blessings and give us access to Him. We see with Jacob and with the apostle John how this โgatewayโ seems to give access to the spiritual realm.
The island of Patmos is theย ideal location to do an in-depth teaching on โthe gate of Heavenโ and what it means to have access to Godโs throne room through prayer, faith and spiritual gifts.
