Bible Study Tour of Egypt – Highlighting Luxor

Besides the Valley of the Kings and Queens there is a substantial amount of Biblical documentation dating back to Joshua’s time. Pharoah Merneptah is highlighted on our tour. Joshua 15:9 “Then the border went around from the top of the hill to the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and extended to the cities of Mount Ephron. And the border went around to Baalah (which is Kirjath Jearim).” Nephtoah is Merneptah in Egypt.

At Karnak see the relief of Merneptah’s or Seti I’s campaign against the Shashu (Hebrew’s) in the mountains of Upper Galilee. Seti I claimed that “the Shashu have no regards for the laws of his palace”, simply because they were following the laws of Moses. A stele to Seti I was found in Beth –Shean in Israel.

At Thebes, visit Pharaoh Merneptah’s tomb. It was here that the famous Israel Stele or Merneptah Stele was found. It is the earliest mention of Israel in Egypt. It was erected by Pharaoh Merneptah in Thebes during his reign in 1213-1203BC. The inscription read “Israel is no longer, its seed is wasted”.

The battle reliefs at Karnak epicts a battle between Egypt and the city of Ashkelon. World famous archeologist Yurco published that the open country scene is a depiction of Israel during Pharaoh Merneptah’s reign.
