Moses' Birth Mother Preserved in Stone for 3500 Years
By Rhonda Sand
Jochebed, or, in Hebrew, Yochebed, was Moses’ birth mother and also was the daughter of Levi. Numbers 26:59: "The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister.” The smallest of details are carried through the scriptures. Hidden in the archives in Cairo for years, a new statue can only now be seen at the new GEM (Grand Museum). This elegant statue is of Levi’s daughter, Jochebed, and her child, Moses. The Levites were one of the original 12 Tribes of Israel and Levi was Jacob’s son. How fitting it is that Moses’ mother was indeed of the line of those who were to oversee the Tabernacle of Yahoveh!
For many years, our clients have been able to see the statue of the young daughter of the fifth Pharoah of Egypt, Hatshepsut, who lifted Moses from the Nile River, became his mother, and then Hatshepsut became one of the most famous of all Pharoah’s of Egypt. You will see the Mummy of Hatshepsut on your Living Passages visit. This statue still resides at the National Museum of Cairo, along with many of the other Biblical treasures. Being now able to see Moses’ birthmother—the Matriarch of Aaron and Miriam, as well—is an incredible new addition to our learning.
Living Passages visits all three of the museums in Cairo. We do this in order to fully explore the antiquities that document the Exodus route of Moses and the time the Patriarchs spent in the Land of Egypt—and one of those museums is the new “GEM” or Grand Museum. The third museum we visit is the museum that houses all of the individual mummies of the Old Testament, including the mummies of the Pharaohs who lived during the time of the Exodus narrative. The images here are Jochebed, with baby Moses in white stone, Hatshepsut, with baby Moses in black stone. As time progresses, the Bible always shines through in truth and beauty. You will see both of these statues on your journey with us.
Living Passages arranges customized Christian travel arrangements for the Bible scholar and their participants that can reach into areas of scripture that are generally overlooked. Call us to plan your next expedition at 208-765-8500.
