Here is the scene in Galilee from Matthew 13:1-2:

That day Jesus went out of the house and was sitting by the sea. And large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach.

Jesus talked about seed falling to the stone in verse 5. As you wander the hilly terrain of Galilee, you’ll notice many black basalt rocks scattered around the land. Farmers would have had to clear each one of those large rocks before planting their seed. Otherwise, as we see in scripture, the seed would fall on the rocky ground and eventually die because the soil wasn’t deep enough.

Another interesting thing to understand about the location where Jesus spoke about the parable of the sower, is the amount of birds that frequent the area.  There are many birds that migrate through this region because of the mild climate. Birds will swarm as farmers begin planting and have to be swooshed away, so they don’t take control of the fields. We read in verse 4 how, “some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up.”

In verse 6 of the parable, the heat came and beat down on the seed. Without enough soil or water in this region, drought can bring dry seasons and sometimes crop failure.
